Bicycle parking

Deelproject van Fietsen

A lot of people use the bicycle in Leiden. Quite good as this keeps the city accessible and the air clean. The municipality invests in parking facilities for bikes.

The public racks and parking facilities for bicycles are free of charge. Some are under supervision. Around Leiden Central Station, the rules of Bike removed apply: bicycles will be removed if they are not parked in the racks. On Saturday, there will be pop-up bike parking facilities available in the city centre: temporary racks that are removed in the evening.

Maximum storage time

Starting from January 1, 2024 bicycles parked at train stations can be parked in the same place for a maximum of two weeks. In the rest of the city, the maximum duration is four weeks. At Leiden Central station, bikes also must be parked in the racks. For more information about these rules, please visit the page Bike removed.

In Leiden, there will be significant changes in car and bicycle parking. Do you want to know more? Visit the ‘Anders Parkeren’ website and view the information by target group and theme.

Bicycles which do not fit in the racks (like cargo bikes, tandems, etc.) and bikes with a combustion engine (like scooters, mopeds and low-performance mopeds) are not allowed due to security reasons.

Has your bike been removed at a temporary parking or at Lange Mare parking? Please contact the municipality via 14 071.

In the municipal bike parking facilities, the general terms and conditions apply. You can find these general terms and conditions here (pdf, 107 kb).

Around Leiden Central station bicycles have to be parked in the racks or parking facilities. If your bike is parked outside a rack it will be removed. Read for more information Bike removed.

Accessibility for people with disabilities

Not all bicycle parkings in the station area have access at ground level. The NS-parking at the LUMC-side has access at ground level to part of the racks. These racks are reachable via a slope. Also the Taxi stand and Lorentz are accessible via a somewhat steeper slope.

The unsupervised parkings in the station area have access at ground level.

In the municipal bike parking facilities, the general terms and conditions apply. You can find these general terms and conditions here (pdf, 107 kb).

You can park your bike unsupervised in sheltered bicycle racks. As of January 1 2024 you can park your bicycle in the same place for a maximum of two weeks. You can also park in a NS-bike locker. You need a year subscription for bike lockers.

Leiden wants to improve the use of bicycles by installing sufficient and good bicycle racks. And in addition, keep more space free for the pedestrian. Are (extra) bike racks in your street a good solution? Then you can apply for it at the municipality. More information about requesting a bicycle rack can be found on the webpage Requesting a bicycle rack (in Dutch).
