Bulky waste

Bulky waste doesn’t fit in a regular garbage bag or underground container due to its weight or size. Bulky waste may not be combined with ordinary waste. Make sure to read the guidelines before you schedule your pickup.

You can make an appointment to bring your bulky waste to the municipal recycling facility. If you can’t bring your bulky waste yourself, you can make an appointment with your DigiD to have your bulky waste collected. Read below to find out what will and will not be collected. Also, read the rules carefully before making an appointment.

In this video two colleagues from the municipality of Leiden explain the best way to dispose of bulky waste (in Dutch).

If you can’t make an appointment online, please call 14 071.

Rules for presenting bulky waste

When do you put your bulky waste outside?

Between 6.30 am and 7.15 am on the day of the appointment. The bulky waste will be collected between 7.15 am and 15.00 pm. You don’t have to stay home.

How do you present your bulky waste?

  • Place the bulky waste along the side of the road, for instance in an empty parking space. Make sure the waste is not placed against a tree or a lamppost.
  • Tie the bulky waste together as much as possible in packages or bundles of a maximum of 1.5 metres and a maximum of 20 kilos each. Individual items that cannot be bundled, can be offered in open boxes or wastebags. Roll up carpeting. Pack glass plates in cardboard.
  • The total amount may not exceed 2m3 (2 meters wide / 1 meter high / 1 meter long). The bulky waste fits in one parking space.
  • Furniture may deviate from the maximum length and width and will be taken in one piece.

Bulky waste may not include

  • Bulky waste, like laminate, that is not tied together, is longer than 1.5 m or heavier than 20 kilos per bundle.
  • Construction and demolition waste; you must transport this waste to the municipal recycling facility. This also includes stones and paving stones.
  • Chemical products, such as paint or fluorescent tubes.
  • Asbestos. There are strict rules for removing asbestos; in most cases, you may not do this yourself.
  • Electrical appliances: Do you have broken electrical or electronic equipment? You can bring them to the thrift store Het Warenhuis.

Costs

There is no charge for the collection of bulky waste or for dropping off bulky waste at the municipal recycling facility.
